Jessie Dolores “Dorie” Snyder, 90, passed peacefully at home Friday, March 27, 2020.
Born Aug. 6, 1929, in Three Springs, she was a daughter of John S. and Margaret J. (Taylor) Zook, and the oldest of five children. She married her high school sweetheart, Jesse Milton Snyder, Oct. 31, 1953, following his rescue from a Korean POW camp. Mr. Snyder preceded her in death in 2005.
Mrs. Snyder is survived by three daughters, Lois J. Boone and husband, Richard, Deborah J. Barrette and Brenda K. Rice and husband, Robert; and five grandchildren, Jessica Boone Levy, Jacob Boone, Rebecca Boone, Brittney Rice and Kelly Rice.
She is also survived by her youngest sister, Dorothy “Dottie” Barley of Big Valley.
She was preceded in death by her siblings, Nancy Mulloy, Alice Britton and John I. Zook
Mrs. Snyder was a lifelong member of Allensville Community Church.
She was a 1948 Huntingdon High School alumni and a graduate of Lewistown School of Nursing.
Mrs. Snyder worked in surgery at Lewistown Hospital for several years before marrying. As an Army wife, she was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, Germany and Japan. Following her husband’s discharge, the Snyders returned to Big Valley in 1967 to rear their family. Mrs. Snyder resumed a nursing career at Valley View Haven, providing health care, healing and comfort to countless patients during her 20-year tenure there.
Upon retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Snyder extensively traveled the United States in their motor home, venturing to all points including Alaska. She also enjoyed gardening, feeding the birds, reading and watching classic movies and TV shows. Her family and friends will remember her as leaving a legacy of love and will greatly miss her.
Due to the current pandemic, there will be a celebration of life service at a later date.
