Edith P. Kanagy

May 24, 1929 - July 9, 2023






Edith P. Kanagy, 94, of 1125 West Back Mountain Road, Belleville, passed away at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2023 at her home.


She was born on May 24, 1929 in Belleville to the late Joseph A. and Ada (Peachey) Byler. Her late husband, Sherman M. Kanagy, whom she married on March 26, 1949, preceded her in death on May 11, 1997. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by twin sister, Ethel Byler, Tilma Harshbarger, Martha Peachey, Mary Byler, Florence Vaughn, Jefferson Byler, Anna Hartzler and stillborn brother Raymond Byler.


She is survived by her children: Ethel C. Lentz and husband Gary of Thompsontown, Glen M. Kanagy and wife Donna, Lee R. Kanagy, Ann M. Smith and husband Glenn, Kenneth R. Kanagy and wife Susan, all of Belleville; grandchildren Derek Lentz and wife Kerry, Darnell Kanagy and wife Brooke, Valerie Sharp & husband Joseph, Michelle Yorks and husband Neal, Shannon Fultz and husband Shawn, Jerad Kanagy and wife Emily, Kendra Sharp and husband Kevin; 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter; sisters Flora Byler of Belleville and Emma Jane Roth and husband Nelson of Belleville.


Edith was primarily a homemaker. She was a member of the Allensville Mennonite Church and the Rainbow Spectrum Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Ladies Sewing Circle at church. She enjoyed going to game day with a group of ladies from the church. She enjoyed watching the birds, doing jigsaw puzzles, word searches, and reading. She had a great sense of humor and a beautiful smile.


Her family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at UPMC Hospice.


The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Allensville Mennonite Church. The burial will take place at the Allensville Mennonite Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. A memorial service will follow at the at 10:30 a.m. at the Allensville Mennonite Church with Bob Zook, Adam Peachey, and Nelson Roth officiating.
