Ella C. Swarey, 90, of 4430 East Main St., Belleville, passed away peacefully at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 28, 2023 surrounded by family.
She was born March 29, 1933 in Middlefield, OH, a daughter of the late Christian E. and Sarah B. (Shrock) Byler. On Dec. 30, 1954 she married Jacob S. Swarey, Sr., who preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 2021.
She is survived by her children, Henry J. Swarey & wife Emma (Peachey) of Mattawana; Sarah B. Peight & husband Louie of Belleville; Mary A. Swarey of Belleville; Sam Swarey & wife Lavina (Peachey) of Allensville; Ada M. Swarey of Martinsburg; Linda J. Yoder & husband Amos of Petersburg; Benuel C. Swarey & wife Sarann (Slabaugh) of McVeytown; Jacob S. Swarey Jr. & wife Marlene (Peachey) of Belleville, NY; and Reuben S. Swarey & wife Kathryn (Helmuth) of Mansfield, NY; 28 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren; a brother, Crist “Poley” Byler & wife Ruth of Middlefield, OH; her step brothers & sisters, Sarah Byler, Andy Byler, Martha (Kempf) Byler, Ida Bontrager & husband Lee, Orpha Hershberger, Sylvia Smialek & husband David; sisters-in-law, Tressa Byler, Lydia Byler, Nancy Swarey, Anna Yoder & husband Kore, and Mary Kanagy & husband Menno.
Ella was preceded in death by a daughter, Ella Mae Swarey, six sisters and three brothers. She was primarily a homemaker and a minister’s wife. Ella was a member of Shavers Creek Fellowship Church and she loved cooking, quilting and later in life embroidering.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023 at Pleasant View Amish Mennonite Church with the Shavers Creek Ministry officiating. Burial will take place at Locust Grove Cemetery following the service. Her viewing will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023 also at Pleasant View Church.
