Esther R. Kauffman, 88, of Belleville, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Valley View Haven.
She was born on April 20, 1937, in Belleville, to the late Alden J. and Sadie R. (Hartzler) Kauffman. On May 23, 1954, she married John A. Kauffman, who survives.
Along with her husband, she is survived by children: Pamela S. Coffman and husband Rex E. of Huntingdon, Norma J. McClure and husband Dennis D. of Belleville, Wendy R. Kauffman and husband Samuel K. of Belleville; grandchildren: J.R. Coffman and wife Grace, Richelle Gearhart and husband William, Julie Smith and husband Melvin, all of Huntingdon. Douglas McClure and wife Mary of Greencastle, Darrin McClure and wife Heather, of Reedsville, Jason Kauffman and wife Lori of Belleville and Jena Lozada and husband Eric of Lititz; 21 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; sister: Betty Yoder of Belleville; Sisters-in-law: Becky Kauffman, Belleville, Anna Allison & husband Chet, Lewistown, Eva Gruber, Lewistown; brother-in-law: Chester Kauffman and wife Robin, Florida.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 5 brothers: Glenn, Mark, Denny, Gary and Dean Kauffman; 3 sisters: Ina Yoder, Virginia Cherry, and Fern Hartzler; 3 brothers-in-law: Melvin Yoder, Lee Hartzler, John Yoder; and 2 sisters-in-law: Beverly Kauffman and Ruth Kauffman.
She attended Belleville High School; she was first employed at D.K. Hostetler’s; she and her husband owned and operated Kauffman’s General Store for 19 ½ years; she then worked at Flowers and Such in Belleville and lastly Peachey’s Craft Shop.
Esther was an active member of Maple Grove Mennonite Church, where she served on the kitchen committee, with the Ladies Sewing Circle, and taught Sunday school. She also grew and arranged the altar flowers for the church for many years.
She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, arranging flowers and doing puzzles. She was a volunteer with the Big Valley Ambulance Club for over 10 years, and volunteered at Big Valley Thrift and Gift Shop.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at the Maple Grove Mennonite Church, 115 Maple Grove Road, Belleville, with Vaughn Kanagy and Herb Zook officiating. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be private at the Locust Grove Cemetery, Belleville.
