Samuel Thomas Fortney

April 10, 1941 - April 2, 2022



Samuel Thomas Fortney, 80, of 141 East Main St., Allensville, passed away on April 2, 2022 at his home.


He was born on April 10, 1941 in Bellwood, PA a son of the late Mervin and Margaret (Woomer) Fortney.

On Aug. 8, 1987, he married Patricia (Graham) Fortney, who preceded him in death on March 1, 2015.

He is survived by: his children, Vickie Fortney of Pittsburgh; Terry Strausser of Florida; Sheryl Pannebaker and husband George of Port Royal; and Samantha Burton & husband Douglas of Altoona; seven grandchildren, Christopher Hollen, Crystal Strausser, Benjamin Strausser, Kenneth Bennett, Emily Burton, Robert Ferrell, and Michael Prouty; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Keith “Bud” Fortney & wife Yolanda of TX; and two sisters, Debra Nelson & husband Ronald of SC; and Susan Singer & husband John of Michigan.

Along with his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Cleova Wallace and a great-grandchild, Kandyn Mitchell.

Sam served in the U. S. Navy from 1958-1962. He was an over the road truck driver for most of his life. Following his retirement from trucking, he enjoyed driving a school van and tending bar. He also enjoyed putting puzzles together, entering sweepstakes, watching the Steelers and Pirates play, as well as watching the NASCAR races. He was a huge John Wayne fan and a stout supporter of the Indian Reservations. He and his wife also liked attending the races at Port Royal for many years.

His funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022 at Henderson Funeral Home, 3813 West Main St., Belleville, PA. His family will receive friends from noon until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Allensville Presbyterian Cemetery.
