Sarah L. “Sally” Book, 83, of Shirleysburg, passed away on May 30, 2025, at Embassy of Woodland Park, Orbisonia.


She was born on July 8, 1941 in Orbisonia to the late Fern “Dutch” and Pauline (Price) Ulsh.  On July 11, 1959, she married Gene H. Book at the Singers Gap United Methodist Church by Reverend Edward Utts and J. Roy Morgan.  They celebrated 50 years of marriage before her husband’s death on October 6, 2009.


Surviving are her children: Polly Jo Williams of Hill Valley, James L. Book and wife Amy of Hill Valley; grandchildren: Laura Hicks and husband Aaron of Cassville, Melanie Petron and husband Brian of Hill Valley, Samuel Williams of Todd; great-grandchildren: Connor Hicks, Henry Petron, Lilly Hicks, Beau Petron; Step-grandchildren: James Mitchell of Germany Valley, Dakota Bickel of Mount Union, and Derek McMullen and wife Hailey, of Oklahoma.


She was the last of her immediate family.


Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ulsh; a sister, Shirley Fortney Waldrop; a son-in-law, Kenneth Williams; and a daughter-in-law Wanda Book.


She graduated from Captain Jack High School in 1959 and worked along-side her husband at their business, Book’s Garage in Hill Valley for 28 years.  She served as the Cromwell Township tax collector for 27 years and was co-founder and President of Huntingdon County Tax Collector’s Association.  Previously, she was Cromwell Township Tax Assessor for 8 years.


She attended Cromwell United Bible Church in Three Springs.


She was a volunteer librarian at the Southern Huntingdon Area Library in Orbisonia for a number of years, and her hobbies included reading and spending time with her family.  She especially loved picnics and reunions under the pavilion at their home. She enjoyed all the trips to the beach and the lake with her family, and the trips she and Gene took out west.  She also loved going to watch her great-grandchildren play sports and attending their concerts.


Her viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from 5 – 8 p.m. and Wednesday, June 4, 2025, from 10 – 11 a.m., with her funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. at Cromwell United Bible Church, 19819 Hill Valley Road, Three Springs, with Pastors Titus Palmer and Rich Morris officiating.  Burial will be held at Rockhill IOOF Cemetery.
