Thomas G. Mathews, Sr.

July 3, 1942 - December 17, 2024

Thomas G. Mathews, Sr, 82, of Belleville, passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at home.

He was born on July 3, 1942, in Osceola Mills, PA to the late Burt T. and Doris F. (Ridgway) Mathews.  On November 26, 1959, he married Jean L. (McConaughey) Mathews, who survives at home.

Along with his wife, he is survived by children: Diane Kauffman and husband Robert of Belleville, Patricia Fleischer and husband Edward of Carlisle, Tammy Yoder and husband Randy of Belleville, and Thomas G. Mathews, Jr. and wife Kristie of Reedsville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister Carol Patkalitsky and husband Joseph of Belleville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings: Burt, James, Donald, and John, sister Joann Bryan and a grandson, Brandon Kauffman.

Tom was a true man of God.  He was a member of Mountain View Mennonite Chapel.  He taught Sunday School and served as a Trustee and was a Youth Group leader.  He was also a member of the Gideons.  

He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and going on the annual Mathews vacations.  

He was the owner of Mathew’s Garage in Belleville for 30 years, retiring in 2004.  He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and detailing his cars.

There will be a memorial service held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at Locust Grove Mennonite Church, 3358 West Main Street, Belleville, with Pastor David Aungst officiating.  A luncheon will be served following the service in the social hall and the family will receive friends at that time.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
