Wilbur C. Ulsh

March 21, 1926 - July 31, 2024





Wilbur C. Ulsh, 98, of 503 Oliver Court, Belleville, PA, where he resided for almost 26 years, entered his heavenly home on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.


He was born on March 21, 1926 in Lewistown, PA to the late Wilbur L. and Annie (McCartney) Ulsh Mahady.  On May 29, 1947, he married Ruth M. (Harris) Ulsh, who preceded him in death in April, 2011.


Surviving is a sister-in-law, Janet Sterneckert of West Lake, OH.


In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Winifred Chafee and Shirley Ferguson; three step-sisters, Opal Holland, Phyllis Esh, and Henrietta Beaver; and two step-brothers, Paul Mahady and Thomas Mahady.


He was a graduate of Burnham High School, Class of 1944, where he played various sports, lettering in football.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, during WWII.  He was a staff sergeant, with the 25th medical battalion, 25th infantry division.  He received the following decorations:  Philippine Liberation with star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Occupation Medal from Japan.  He then went to work at Standard Steel from April 1947 until his retirement in December 1982, as a supervisor of material flow of railroad products.


He has been a member of the Walnut Street United Methodist Church in Burnham since April 1939.  He is a life member of the Burnham & Newtown Fire Companies; a member of the Supervisors club at Standard Steel, S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A., Barbershop chorus, a member of United Commercial Travelers, and Vice-President of Local #2921.


He served eight years on the Burnham Borough Council and four of those years he was acting President.  He served on the Burnham Borough Sewer Authority, was on administrative council and trustees at the Walnut Street United Methodist Church and was a scout master of Troop #6 for eight years.


He was an avid Penn State fan.  He served as a basketball coach for the Burnham Methodist Church league basketball and also the YMCA, where he impacted many youth for several years.  He was very involved with the activities and served as the President in the Valley View Village for many years.  He also had a servant’s heart for the staff at Valley View and the residents in Memory Lane.


A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at the Valley View Haven Chapel, Belleville with Pastor Gerald Peachey officiating. Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the chapel.  Burial will take place at Mount Rock Cemetery in Lewistown at 4:30 p.m.
